Reimagining Capsule Tray: SONITE Launched A New Home Décor Item Made of Upcycled Materials From Water Hyacinth.

6,072,230 tons of water hyacinth were discarded all over Thailand in 2022. Water Hyacinth is known as a serious pest due to its ability to grow rapidly and cover large areas of water bodies. A large free-floating water hyacinth clogs the waterway, blocks sunlight, and depletes oxygen which poses a serious threat to the biodiversity of the freshwater ecosystem.

SONITE is inspired by the challenge to manage and control this invasive weed. We found that dried water hyacinths can be repurposed into an eco-friendly material that is lightweight and impact resistant. We are proud to launch “Capsule Tray”, a tray made of upcycled water hyacinth mixed with other durable materials. Generally, a kilogram of dried water hyacinth is made of approximately 12 – 13 kilograms of fresh water hyacinth. This upcycled material could reduce the amount of water hyacinth needed to be disposed of, lessen the use of plastic in home decorative item design, and contribute to a more sustainable approach to managing this invasive species.

เปลี่ยน ‘ผักตบชวา’ ให้มีดีไซน์กลายเป็น ‘Capsule Tray’ ถาดใส่ของเอนกประสงค์ที่ช่วยบรรเทาปัญหาวัชพืชและมลพิษทางน้ำได้อย่างยั่งยืน

6,072,230 ตัน คือน้ำหนักของ ‘ผักตบชวา’ ที่ถูกกำจัดในปี 2565 ด้วยลักษณะของผักตบชวาเป็นพืชล้มลุก เจริญเติบโตรวดเร็ว อุ้มน้ำ และมีรากยาวเกาะเกี่ยวกัน ผักตบชวาจึงคลื่อนตัวเป็นแพใหญ่กีดขวางเส้นทางระบายน้ำ แพที่หนาแน่นยังลดออกซิเจนในน้ำ ส่งผลให้ความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพของลุ่มน้ำลดลง

SONITE จึงเกิดไอเดียที่จะแก้ปัญหามลพิษทางน้ำจากผักตบชวา และพบว่าเมื่อนำก้านผักตบชวามาตากแห้งในระดับที่พอเหมาะจะได้วัสดุที่เหนียว น้ำหนักเบา และรองรับแรงกระแทกได้ดี จึงลองผสมผักตบชวากับวัสดุอื่นและจัดการอัพไซเคิลให้เป็นวัสดุใหม่ที่เป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม ผสานดีไซน์ขึ้นรูปเป็น “Capsule Tray” ถาดอเนกประสงค์ โดยปกติผักตบชวาราว 12 – 13 กิโลกรัมจะได้ผักตบชวาแห้ง 1 กิโลกรัม วัสดุอัพไซเคิลนี้จึงช่วยลดปริมาณขยะผักตบชวาที่ทางการต้องกำจัด ลดสัดส่วนการใช้พลาสติกสำหรับของใช้และของแต่งบ้าน ตลอดจนสร้างคุณค่าใหม่ให้แก่วัชพืชได้อย่างยั่งยืน
