Recycling VS Upcycling: What are the differences between the two?

Over decades, the 3Rs – “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” – are the principles of waste minimization. Recycling has been added to our routine to encourage the effective use of resources and materials. Recently, people interested in design and environmental conservation have probably heard the word “Upcycling” which implies the process of creatively reusing the waste materials 

The term “Upcycling” first appeared in William McDonough’s book “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things by”. By merging ‘upgrade’ and ‘recycling/cycle’, upcycling is a form of recycling where instead of turning waste into new materials, it provides things a second life by adding creativity, design, and technology. Upcycling often originates a new product of a higher quality or value with a lower impact on the environment.

 “Recycling” involves breaking down used or wasted materials into their raw components, and then, using those components to create new products. The goal of recycling is to reduce the need for new raw materials which helps lower the production cost. However, the recycling process might affect the durability of the recycled material since the structure of the material is broken down. 

Albeit the differences, upcycling and recycling have made a greener world through the process of bringing waste up to a valued life. With a mutual goal to reduce waste and support a more circular economy, their act yields a sustainable future for future generations.

ชุบชีวิตของเหลือทิ้งอย่างไรให้ยั่งยืน รู้จักความแตกต่างระหว่าง Recycle และ Upcycle หัวใจของเศรษฐกิจหมุนเวียนเพื่อโลกที่ดีขึ้น

ปัญหาขยะ เป็นปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมทั่วโลกให้ความสำคัญ เพราะเป็นสาเหตุที่ก่อให้มลภาวะต่างๆ มากมาย และหากพูดถึงการจัดการกับปัญหาขยะ หลายคนคงคิดถึงหลัก 3 Rs ซึ่งก็คือ Reduce Reuse and Recycle หรือการใช้น้อย ใช้ซ้ำ และนำกลับมาใช้ใหม่ แต่ในแวดวงของการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม มีอีกคำหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจไม่แพ้กัน นั่นก็คือ Upcycle 

คำว่า Upcycle ปรากฏครั้งแรกในหนังสือ Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things เขียนโดย William McDonough มาจากคำว่า Upgrade ที่หมายถึงการทำให้ดีขึ้นหรือพัฒนาให้ดีขึ้น รวมกับคำว่า Recycling/Cycle ซึ่งรวมกันแล้วจะหมายถึง การนำวัสดุที่ไม่ใช้แล้วหรือของที่จะถูกทิ้งเป็นขยะมาแปลงให้เป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ชิ้นใหม่ที่มีคุณภาพที่ดีขึ้น สามารถกลับมาใช้ประโยชน์ได้ หรือออกแบบให้มีความสวยงามเพื่อเพิ่มมูลค่า โดยไม่ทำให้คุณภาพและส่วนประกอบของวัสดุนั้นลดลง ทั้งนี้ จะไม่ผ่านกระบวนการแปรรูปทางอุตสาหกรรมและไม่ผ่านกระบวนการทางเคมีที่มีผลเสียต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมหรือใช้เคมีน้อยที่สุด 

ขณะที่คำว่า Recycle เป็นการนำวัสดุจากผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ไม่สามารถใช้ซ้ำในจุดประสงค์เดิมหรือยืดอายุการใช้งานได้แล้ว เพราะมีสภาพเสียหาย หรือหมดอายุการใช้งาน มาเข้ากระบวนการแปรรูปหรือผลิตเป็นวัสดุเดิมซ้ำ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อลดต้นทุนการผลิตให้น้อยลง แทนที่จะผลิตจากการใช้วัสดุใหม่ทั้งหมด แต่คุณภาพของวัตถุดิบอาจลดลงจากกระบวนการแปรรูป

ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้น ทั้ง 2 คำ คือกระบวนการที่จะช่วยชุบชีวิต ยืดอายุของสิ่งของเหลือใช้ ไม่ให้กลายเป็นขยะ เพื่อให้ยังสามารถนำมาใช้ประโยชน์ได้ต่อไป เปรียบเสมือนช่วยต่อลมหายใจให้สิ่งแวดล้อม และช่วยลดการใช้ทรัพยากรสิ่งแวดล้อมใหม่ที่จะเข้าสู่กระบวนการผลิตนั่นเอง
