Chairman Mao enters modern iconography as one of the world’s most recognized images, thanks to Andy Warhol’s silk screen portraits of politicians and celebrities. Mao symbolizes an era of massive change in China, a country that has emerged to become the world’s leading economy today.
Mao was beloved for his revolutionary status. Despite his fame, there are few giant Mao statues in China today. One of the largest and most visible is in the city of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province. Situated in front of Tianfu Square in the city center, he stands 30 meters (98 feet) tall, one-third the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York.
Artist Ingrid Booz Morejohn has been living in Chengdu for eight years and used her photographs to map out this Chengdu Mao for our collection. Using Sonite’s rich color palettes, we offer this contemporary icon in three different color sets. They can be used in full height or cropped and framed as a contemporary art piece.
